Eastern Leisure Centre sits at the heart of the local community and attracts over 220,000 visitors per year. The existing building was over 30 years old and its current condition was compromising the level of effectiveness the facility is providing to the community.
Capital funding was made available to refurbish the leisure centre to continue to attract users to the facility and to improve on the existing level of use.
The new refurbishment adapted the existing structure providing a three court sports hall, two squash courts, 25 metre level deck swimming pool and changing village, state of the art fitness suite, studio rooms, spin and toning room, café hub with large soft play facilities.
The project included the complete removal of the existing internal and external services for the Leisure Centre including the existing utility services.
New services were installed to current standards ensuring that energy efficiency was incorporated into the scheme including LED lighting, heat recovery from all air plant, a combined heat and power unit (CHP), and an array of evacuated tube thermal solar collectors installed on the roof to serve the domestic hot water and the swimming pool, and is certified to Secure By Design.
